*** UNDER CONSTRUCTION *** Please forgive our mess

Like many artists born in The American West; I am inspired by the vastness of this Western geography and humbled by it’s sheer beauty. I am unceasingly influenced by the wildlife, the land and the skies. It provides constant inspiration, stimulation and awe. I feel the natural world deserves the reverence many convey to the ’supernatural’.

From a very young age, I was fascinated by and admired Native American culture as well as that of other indigenous peoples across the Earth. In a lot of my work I try to incorporate ‘primitive’ motifs or patterns. A viewer of one of my landscapes, said it reminded him of the “Dream Time” art of the Aborigine Australian. I love nature and I love science. I also often try to incorporate scientific or biological principles such as adaptation or mimicry into my art. For instance, I am fascinated how some insects wings or birds feathers mimic eyes to scare of predators.

Speaking of eyes, from a very young age I have been entranced by eyes. There is the ‘windows to the soul’ relation and revelation. There is the emotion conveyed by one’s eyes. But as much as anything, I think they are by themselves: beautiful gems. The complexity and colors of the eyes of both humans and wildlife fascinate me and are often incorporated into my work.

Another passion from a very young age, that has made it’s way into my art, is fishing. “I love fish. I love catching fish. I love eating fish. I love drawing and painting fish. The biology and beauty and variety inspire me. Fish have an iridescence, patterning and coloration that also have become inspiration in some work. I love being near rivers and bodies of water. Sunlight sparkling off water is like medicine for my soul.

The biggest overall influence on my art the last 20 years has probably been stained glass. I have been working in a style mimicking stained glass. I love the bold thick outlines and bold colors of stained glass. Quilts are also an inspiration for my art. I create textures and patterns to further mimic types of glass or other types of materials or ornamentation that can be incorporated into actual stained glass. To me the stained glass style serves as a flexible working style and a metaphor for my attitude towards nature.

American Paint

I have always loved horses and they are, if not my favorite animal, certainly in my top 5. I was always drawing them as a kid.

The fact that there is a breed of wild horses called ‘American Paint’ felt like a natural inspiration for a painting.

The original work was mixed media. It is 16″ wide by 20″ tall.

Prints of this are available.

Bear Butte

I was born and raised in Deadwood, so this Black Hills landmark outside Sturgis has always been an icon for locals and visitors to the Sturgis Bike Rally.

This work was  painted in oils. It is 20″ wide by 16″ tall.

Prints of this are available in both the original 16″x20 but also  14″ x 11″.

Greeting the Sunrise

This is another in my ‘eye’ works. Some work I go into with a pretty good idea of the end result I’m pursuing. This wasn’t one of those. Some paintings/concepts evolve on their own as this one did.

I wanted to create a ‘pheasant chicken’ hybrid crowing at the sunrise. The head I painted to look like a large eyeball. I wanted to make the head out of smaller ‘feather like’ eyes.

I made the ‘main pupil’ glow like the core of the rising sun. I wanted to mimic the large adorning feathers pointed arcs in the clouds.

This original was painted in acrylics and is 24″ wide by 18″ tall. Prints are available in it’s original size and also 20″x16″, 14″x11″, and 10″x8″.

THE ORIGINAL OF THIS WORK IS FOR SALE: $1000

Sitting Bull

I have always been fascinated by Native American culture. I used to read tons of books on ‘Indians’ as a kid. I was born and raised in Deadwood and used to love when the Sioux came to Deadwood for the ‘Days of 76’ parade.

This painting, like many of my ‘stained glass’ paintings are very time intensive. This painting probably took 40 to 50 hours.

This work is in oil and is 16″ wide by 20″ tall. Prints are available in the original 16×20 size, 11″x14″, and 8″x10″.

THE ORIGINAL OF THIS WORK IS FOR SALE: $1000

Trout Americana

This Trout launched a series of ‘cut out’ Trout, all based on the same profile. I am an avid fisherman and one day started thinking about mounted fish trophies and I wanted to do profiles I could cut out and hang like trophies. I wanted to combine this with a ‘stained glass’ look I started working in.

This ‘species’ required painting hundreds of circles and about half way through I started regretting it. I wanted to combine red, white, and blue in a retro ‘Americana’ scheme.

I also came up with a technique to reproduce these with waterjet cut blanks and handcut prints.

The original is available and for sale. It is 26″ x 6″. It is acrylic painted on 3/4″ pine. I also mount these on a 1.5″ thick hanger to separate it from the wall so it’ll cast shadows like real trophies. The original is priced at $800.

Reproductions are available for $100 each plus shipping

Circle Trout

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass, and the second in my cut out mounted fish series.

Making a fish out of circles seemed like a natural as numerous species have dot or circle patterns. Within many of the circles, I created a range from ancient motifs to science. For instance one is an ‘atom pattern’.

Most of my original cutout paintings are directly on pine cutouts. This was a painting on high quality paper and then adhered to ‘blank’. This one glued up perfectly and has held up well. But I decided it best to paint the rest directly on pine in follow up ‘species’.

Like the first one, ‘Americana’, I got this scanned and have made reproductions. Also like ‘Americana’ the original is available for sale. I am selling this original for $400. I am confident in it’s longevity. I’ll sell this with the guarantee that if any separation from base occurs, while stored or displayed in ordinary  manner, I will accept return and refund money.

Reproductions are available for $100 each plus shipping

Wave Trout

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass, and the third in my cut out mounted fish series.

Making a fish out of waves, like circles, also seemed like a ‘natural’ as fish live in and generate waves. Within the waves, I created a wide range geometric patterns. The palette like my circle trout is predominately gold, silver and bronze, and of course my ‘stained glass leading’.

Reproductions are available for $100 each plus shipping.

Trout Americana Swimming

I decided to do prints of my cutout mounted fish series above. I painted a background and then composited my cutouts over a ‘water’ background.

This print is available in multiple sizes. Size and price listings coming soon.

Circle Trout Swimming

Brown Trout

This is an original work of art and is actually based on a Brown Trout I caught in Devil’s Lake, WI.

It is a watercolor. It is approxiately 20″ wide by 8″ tall.

The original watercolor is for sale for $250.

Prints are also available.

Speckled Trout

This is an original work of art and is a tribute to fishing for this beautiful marine species in the Gulf of Mexico.

The original is available for purchase for $600.

Prints are also available.

Grey Owl and Full Moon

I love birds of prey. I love owls, eagles, and hawks.

Like horses, I was always drawing birds of prey as a kid. This painting evolved out of an earlier pastel drawing I did. The original is oil and is 24″ wide by 18″ tall.

Prints are available as the original 24 x 18, but also 20 x 16, 14 x 11, and 10 x 8.

Dragonfly on Wild Rye

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass. Dragonflies are truly incredible, fascinating insects.

I have always enjoyed seeing them in nature. Their segmented wings seemed a perfect ‘stained glass’ structure.

This painting was done in acrylics and is 24″ wide by 18″ tall.

Tree of L’ Eyefe

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass.

This work is surprisingly a lot of people’s favorite work of mine. For some reason I didn’t expect.

The original is oil on canvas, 20″ wide by 16″ tall, and is available for purchase $900.

Prints are available in 20″ x 16″, 14 x 11, and 10″ x 8″.

Land Title and Abstract

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass. In fact this is a recreation of a drawing I did in college that basically launched my stained glass style.

I love playing off puns in my art and in my titling especially. I tried to semi-successfully incorporate the concept of ‘title’ or ‘deed’ for land and that the phrase  ‘abstract’ is also used in property deeds.

The original is 24″ wide by 18″ tall an is available for purchase $800.

Prints are available in 24 x 18 and 14 x 11.

Torn Sky Lake

This painting is based on a photo I took at one of my favorite fishing lakes in the Black Hills, Deerfield Lake. As I started working on the sky, I started thinking about segmenting the gaps between clouds. I also started thinking about how I most often only think about stars when I see them at night. But there always there, and I thought about how cool it’d be to see stars through ‘tears’ – thus the ‘torn’.

The original  is oil on canvas, is 35.5″ wide by 10.75″ tall and is available for purchase $1200.

Prints are available at original size, _x_, and _x_.

Bone Grouper Swimming

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass. The original ‘cut out’ was the very first cut out.

Prints are available for sale.

Eyebis

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass. You will see in my gallery I love painting birds. You will also see I love painting eyes.

I noticed some wading birds have ‘eye’ shaped bodies. And of course what better to base an ‘Eye Bird’ on beside an Ibis. A bird worshiped in Egypt.

The original is oil on canvas, is 18″ wide by 24″ tall, and is available for sale $900.

Prints are also available at 18″ x 24″, 11 x 14, and 8 x 10.

Pheasant

This is an original work of art and another in my homage to birds. The Ring Neck Pheasant is a South Dakota icon and seemed a perfect base for  ‘stained glass’.

The original is oil on canvas and is 24″ wide and 18″ tall and is available to purchase $600.

Prints are also in original 24 x 18, 20 x 16, 12 x 9, and 10 x 8.

Green Iguana

While living in Florida did a few works with reptiles. Did an iguana painting in a more realistic style I wasn’t happy with, so I reworked it into my stained glass style.

The original is oil on canvas, 12″ wide by 9″ tall, and is available for sale $120.

Prints are available.

Starfish

Had been wanting to do a starfish as ‘stained glass’ for years. When trying to decide inlaid motif, it occurred to me well, of course, stars.

The original is acrylic on canvas, is 24″ by 24″, and is available for purchase $700.

Prints are available 24 x 24, 18 x 18, 12 x 12, 8 x 8, and 6 x 6.

Large Mouth Bass

After doing a half dozen stylized fish ‘species’ I decided to do some in a more realistic rendering. Like the other fish in my ‘mount’ series of cut out ‘trophies’, this has a hanger to offset away from the wall so it casts shadows like a real mount.

The original is acrylic on pine, is _x_, and is available for purchase $400.

Walleye

After doing a half dozen stylized fish ‘species’ I decided to do some in a more realistic rendering. This was 3rd in the real look series. This one has hundreds of scales that took a lot of time.

Like the other fish in my ‘mount’ series of cut out ‘trophies’, this has a hanger to offset away from the wall so it casts shadows like a real mount.

The original is acrylic on pine, is _x_, and is available for purchase $500.

Northern Pike

After doing a half dozen stylized fish ‘species’ I decided to do some in a more realistic rendering. This was actually derived from a painting I did of a Pike in water. I then decided to add it to my ‘mount’ series of cut out ‘trophies’, this has a hanger to offset away from the wall so it casts shadows like a real mount.

The original is printed paper and acrylic on pine, is _x_, and is available for purchase $300.

Reproductions are available.

Nautilis

Always looking for ‘bases’ to create ‘stained glass’ within. I had a simple sketch outline of a Nautilus shell I started on wood and this one kind of took on a life of it’s own. Some times trying to think of glass patterns can be a challenge. This one sprang to life.

The original is acrylic on pine, is _ x _, and is available for purchase for $225.

Dragonfly

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass. The ‘original’ is from a painting listed above.

Reproductions are available.

Eyed Grouper

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass. This cut out fish mount, was done a couple years after, and derived form an oil painting on canvas, displayed down page.

This reproduction is _ x _, and is available for purchase $90.

Rainbow Glass Trout

As I mentioned in another description, I handcrafted reproductions of my ‘cut out’ fish. I also did a cut out of my Brown Trout watercolor above. Sold a couple but had a bunch of blanks I wanted to repurpose. Decided to adapt profile while maintaining fin, eye, and mouth details.

The original is acrylic on pine, is _x_, and is available for purchase for $400.

Rainbow Runner

I often decide ‘species’ I want to create by their profile. This profile built for speed is based on an actual species called Rainbow Runner. Thought I’d play off the name as well. As I mentioned in my header, I love the ‘spectral’ properties of fish. The shimmer and the colors.

Like all my larger cut out mount series, this has a 3/4″ deep hanger to offset from wall and cast shadows like real mounts do.

This original is quite large, is _x_, is acrylic on pine and is available for purchase for $800.

Sunset Salmon

Another profile built for speed. Salmon was always a species I knew I wanted to honor. Had the concept of combining a seascape into my ‘stained glass’ treatment. As mentioned in another description, I love the fact a lot of fish have dots and circles. I wanted the moon to be a circle on the tail like a Redfish.

A lot of fish species also brighten up for mating, so I thought a setting sun as the head, with clouds transitioning into stars was a cool theme. The belly represents waves.

The original is _x_, is acylic on wood, and is available for purchase $700.

Bone Grouper

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass. This was the first ‘cut out’ in my fish mount concepts. I often go into these concepts thinking “what would I do if I could design species”.

I thought I’d play off the skeleton as a ‘decoy’; potential predators think “It’s nothing but bones”.

The original is acrylic on pine and is _x_ and available for purchase for $600.

Rainbow Glass Trout Swimming

As mentioned elsewhere, I wanted to make prints of all my species, so I created a water background and composited it with all my cutout species.

Rainbow Runner Swimming

As mentioned elsewhere, I wanted to make prints of all my species, so I created a water background and composited it with all my cutout species.

Eyed Grouper

This is the painting I was working on when I came up with the idea for cut out wall mount trophies. It is also another work in my ‘eye works’. As I mentioned elsewhere I am fascinated by the use of ‘fake eyes’ by animals as a deterrent. So this species oughta be quite intimidating.

The original is _x_, is oil on canvas, and is available for purchase for $400.

Sunset Salmon Swimming

As mentioned elsewhere, I wanted to make prints of all my species, so I created a water background and composited it with all my cutout species.

Aspen

In this painting I tried a bit of an illusion where you can’t tell if the spaces between the front trees might be more trees or just spaces.

This is based off a photo I took near sundown so I tried to incorporate that into the painting.

The original is oil on canvas, is _x_, and is available for purchase $450.

Chameleyeon

Another work in my ‘eye’ series. Always dug chameleons both because they look like some alien species, but also love their crazy pivoting eyes and their coil tails. I had to include a spiral galaxy in the night sky to mimic the tail.

Of course chameleon’s ability to ‘camo’ is fascinating to me. And as mentioned elsewhere, I love the way animals mimic eyes to scare predators. So like my ‘Eyebis’, I wanted to make a large eye out of smaller eyes. But in this painting I took it even a step further and made the tree bark and leaves eyes as well.

The original is acrylic on canvas, is 20″ wide and 16″ tall and is available for purchase $750. Prints are also available

Tree Frog on Palm Leaf

Another in my ‘eye’ series. Love frogs. Hate the fact they are ecological barometers and are sadly disappearing at frightening rates. Can you imagine being out camping and not hearing frogs croaking. That is music we should not lose.

The original was oil on canvas and is _x_. Prints are available

Seahorse

This painting was one of my first ‘stained glass’ paintings. It is catually a reworked watercolor, I then painted acrylics over.

This piece is large. _x_. The original is available for purchase for $1000. Prints are also available.

Dragonfleye

In my Dragonfly description I mentioned my fascination with dragonflies. I had a small painting I kept working on a while then abandoning. Once I started my ‘stained glass” paintings I thought it a great work to revisit. I made the eyes wings, then tried to fill all the voids with different times and weather.

This is a small piece, it is 8×10, is oil on canvas and is available for purchase $300. Prints are also available.

Koi and Water Lily

This is another reworked painting that lingered unfinished. Decided to ‘stain glass’ it and was very happy with final product. Original is 16×16 and is available for purchase $300.

Prints are also available.

Fleyeing Fish

Another in my ‘fish with eyes’ series. Thought I’d do a flying fish as eyes. This piece is 20×16, is acrylic on canvas and is available for purchase $300. Prints are also available.

Two Tree Sunbeam

This is a large painting based on a photo I took after pulling off the interstate to try to capture this ‘spotlight’.

I liked the way it highlighted these 2 trees, one dead and one very alive.

This canvas is acrylic on canvas and is 16×36, the original is available for purchase $400. Prints are also available.

Just a Little Hill on the Way to Hill City

Lived outside Hill City for a few months and regularly drove by this little, somewhat unimpressive hill, but for some reason thought it would make a cool painting. It is 30×24 and prints are available

Hog’s Back at Mt. Roosvevlt

This is a local landmark to Deadwood residents. In high school it was one of our favorite overlook parking spots. It is 32×24 and prints are available

Wild Daisies

This large piece is based on a photo I took. It is oil pastels on illustration board. It is 36×36 and the original is available for purchase $400.

Prints are available.

Prayer Plant

This is a painting I did in college. It is oil on canvas, is 9×12 and is available for purchase $350.

Prints are available.

Long Earred Grebe

Funny little story about this little bird. Was fishing at Deerfield Lake and must of been near this bird’s nest. Kept trying to ignore it but kept swimming back and forth in front of me, so I thought I might as well get my camera. As soon as I photographed him/her, it swam away.

This is a watercolor, is 16×16,  and is available for purchase $125. Prints are available.

See Shell

This is a charcoal drawing I did in college and was  second in my “let’s see just how many things I can turn into eyes” series.

It is 16×16 and is available for purchase $100.

Prints are also available

See Shell

This is an acrylic painting based on a charcoal drawing I did in college. It is 16×16 and the original is available for purchase $200. Prints are also available

Old Man and Horse

This is a reproduction print of an etching I did in college. It is based on a photo from National Geographic. The original is 8×12 as are the prints. I also have a sepia variation.

Spectral Lightning Shell

As you will see in the following shell pastels, while I lived in Florida I thought realistic shell drawings and paintings would sell well. I decided to ‘stain glass’ the next listed work.

I also like to do spectral palettes. I love lightning and decided to use it as a ‘break’ to set off the shell segment of the original. Out of the coil I included some mini scenes, waterfall, grass, and waves.

Snail Shell

While living in Florida I did a series of large shell pastel drawings. They were all based on shells I had collected.

This drawing is _x_ and the original is available for purchase. Prints are also available.

Welk Shell

While living in Florida I did a series of large shell pastel drawings. They were all based on shells I had collected.

This drawing is _x_ and the original is available for purchase. Prints are also available.

Scallop Shell

While living in Florida I did a series of large shell pastel drawings. They were all based on shells I had collected.

This drawing is _x_ and the original is available for purchase. Prints are also available.

Sunbeam Butterfly

This is an original work of art and another in my style derived from and mimicking stained glass. I have long loved the color vibrance of stained glass. I like to portray animals, wildlife, nature and the planet with reverence.

Daiseye
